The rule was simple: no screens during the first hour after waking up. The phone stayed in another room, and an actual alarm clock took its place.

Days 1–2: withdrawal

My hand kept reaching for the nightstand out of habit. Turns out I "check my phone" not out of necessity but reflex — like a yawn.

Days 3–5: quiet

Suddenly there was time for coffee, a walk to the window, a page or two of a book. My brain didn't get sucked into other people's news before breakfast.

Days 6–7: a new normal

The experiment ended, but part of the rule stuck. Now I pick up my phone after a shower, not straight out of bed.

You don't have to give up your phone forever. Just take back the start of your day.
